About the Author
Richard Lee (B.A. and M.A., University of Toronto; Ph. D., University of California, Berkeley) is a professor of anthropology at the University of Toronto and a member of the faculty of the Centre for International Health. He has held academic appointments at Harvard, Rutgers, and Columbia Universities, and research positions at Stanford, the Australian National University, and Kyoto University. His current research interests include the social and cultural aspects of HIV/AIDS, human rights and indigenous peoples, critical medical anthropology gender relations, and the politics of culture. He is internationally known for his studies of hunting-and-gathering societies, particularly the Ju/hoansi-!Kung San of Botswana. His book the !Kung San (1979) was honored by inclusion on a list of the 100 most important works of science of the 20th century by the journal American Scientist (1999, November). A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and past president of the Canadian Anthropology Society, Dr. Lee has been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Alaska and Guelph University for his research and advocacy on behalf of indigenous peoples.

About the Author

Patricia J. Benjamin, PhD, LMT is a massage therapist, educator, author, and appreciative massage and bodywork client. She has a deep respect for massage therapy as an art, science, and wellness practice. She has studied its traditions and watches for trends in the massage therapy profession today.

Building on her earlier background in sports and fitness, Dr. Benjamin graduated from the Chicago School of Massage Therapy in the mid-1980s. She was drawn to massage as an active, hands-on therapy whose foundations dovetail with her former career in health, physical education, and recreation. After having a full-time massage therapy practice, she gravitated back to education, first as an association education director, and then as a teacher and massage school administrator. Over the years, she has served on various committees involved in the development of ethical standards and national certification for massage therapists, and the accreditation of massage programs.

Dr. Benjamin has taught at the high school and college levels, and enjoys developing curriculum materials for the career-oriented courses offered in vocational programs. She holds master’s and advanced study degrees in education with a specialty in curriculum development from Northern Illinois University. A doctorate in recreation and leisure studies from Purdue University has deepened her appreciation of the many facets of wellness and grounded her in a variety of research methods.

Frances M. Tappan approached Patricia Benjamin to join her as coauthor of Healing Massage Techniques for its 3rd edition (1998). After Dr. Tappan’s passing in 1999, Dr. Benjamin continued to update and improve Tappan’s Handbook of Healing Massage Techniques (2010), which remains a standard in the field. Dr. Benjamin authored Professional Foundations for Massage Therapists (2009) to address related professional competencies and combined that information with basic massage skills and applications in Pearson’s Massage Therapy: Blending Art with Science (2011). This latest edition of Tappan’s Handbook combines all three of its predecessors for the most comprehensive and up-to-date presentation of the theory and practice of massage therapy available today. Tappan’s Handbook of Massage Therapy: Blending Art and Science, sixth edition, remains true to Frances Tappan’s vision of healing massage as holistic manual therapy that contributes to the well-being of humanity in so many ways.

In her leisure time, Dr. Benjamin enjoys reading historical fiction and nonfiction, gardening, tai chi and qi gong, and table tennis. Her outdoor pursuits include hiking, canoeing, and birding. She currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.

Maurice Druon was a French resistance hero, a Knight of the British Empire and a holder of the Grand Croix de la Légion d'Honneur. He was also a member of the Académie française and a celebrated novelist, best known for his series of seven historical novels under the title of The Accursed Kings, which were twice adapted for television. In the 14th-century France The Strangled Queen opens and closes with vital notes exchanged with England and a journey to Naples to recover a portrait and a message that will decide the future of France. Details are shared with the reader that seamlessly blends history, peerless writing and imagination to fashion a story that begs the question, is 12 feet of wall enough to deter madness and evil? The historical narrative continues after the death of Philip the Fair, with his oldest- although weakest- son Louis X taking the throne. Unfortunately, the King is without a queen since the princess was imprisoned for her adulterous affair with an equerry. Although the underlying theme set forth by the Templar's curse on the rulers in the previous book, the main story is the King' s pursuit of procuring a queen, which cannot be accomplished without either the annulment of his previous marriage or the death of his former wife. An annulment can be pronounced only with the help of clergy. There is, therefore, political pressure on the church, bribing all around, factions of the royal families and nobility fighting for control and seizing every opportunity to manipulate the situation for personal gain of lands and positions. As usual, a few favors thrown around can buy accusations and proof sufficient to arrange hangings of anyone standing in the way of the ambitious. Maurice Druon was an accomplished writer and the English translation is well done.

The Strangled Queen is a solid read but a somewhat less impressive than The Iron King. The author is in some ways, victim of his own success. By opening the first installment 7 years into the trial of the Knights Templar, Maurice Druon created a narrative that seemed like history on steroids. The second installment ties up a few loose ends and continues story lines but it is tame by comparison to earlier events.That said, the best historical fiction hews closely to known facts. If The Strangled Queen isn’t as sensational, it is as impressive and as plausible. Druon’s characters are believable—royals, arriviste ministers, bankers, etc. are all convincing. Each has flaws and imperfections, and there are no romantic “heroes”. Ironically, the “reformers” are as appalling as reactionary barons; to the overwhelming majority of the population, either camp intends to squeeze every last denier out of the hapless masses. Both are deplorable.The Strangled Queen reminded me of I Claudius in that often the villains are far more interesting and enjoyable than the decent sort. Robert III, Count of Artois is particularly appalling and appealing. Enguerrand Marigny is a marvelous paradox. I did miss Isabelle, wife of Edward II of England. Her venom and bile are a real treat. Some have complained the very title is a spoiler and I see their point. However, the why and who were much more important than the actual deed.Though I liked Iron King more I’m rating its sequel as highly. With fewer sensational events, the author is just as impressive, just as engaging. There are extremely helpful footnotes that helpfully flesh out the story Well done.
